U.S. Stocks End Mixed; J.P. Morgan Fronts Blue-chip Recovery

NEW YORK — U.S. stocks on Monday recovered the bulk of steep losses, with J.P. Morgan Chase leading a blue-chip rise one day after its heavily discounted bid for Bear Stearns Cos. and the Federal Reserve’s extraordinary discount-rate cut, its first such weekend move in nearly 30 months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 21.16 points to end at 11,972.25. The S&P 500 shed 11.53 points to 1,276.61, while tha Nasdaq Composite declined 35.48 points to 2,177.01.
