Broadhurst among trio to lead Madrid Open

MADRID, Spain (AP) — Veteran Briton Paul Broadhurst birdied two of his last three holes for a four-under-par 67 and a share of the first round lead at the Madrid Masters in Spain.

Late birdies helped Briton Paul Broadhurst share the opening round lead in the Madrid Masters.

Broadhurst was joined by Sweden’s Magnus Carlsson and Marcus Fraser of Australia, with the trio one stroke ahead of a host of challengers.

“I just stuck in there really and had to make a couple of miracle shots to keep it ticking over,” said the 43-year-old Broadhurst.

Spanish Ryder Cup player Miguel Angel Jimenez is among the chasing pack two shots behind, while former U.S. Open champion Angel Cabrera of Argentina was forced to settle for a 71.

Federico Cabrera looked unlikely to follow his father Angel into the weekend after shooting a 10-over 81 to sit second to last.

Meanwhile, Jose Maria Olazabal returned from an injury to shoot a one-under 70. The 42-year-old Spaniard, a two-time Masters champion, showed little signs of the back pain and fatigue that had plagued him since his last competitive round in June.
