39 Dead After Truck Plunges Off Bridge in India
BANGALORE, India A truck packed with revelers traveling to a wedding plunged off a bridge in southern India on Thursday, killing at least 39 people and trapping others in the submerged vehicle, police said.
The truck was carrying some 70 people over a bridge when the driver lost control while trying to avoid some electrical wires on the road, said Sharath Chandra, the police chief of the Hassan district in Karnataka state where the accident happened.
Chandra said 39 bodies have been recovered so far, adding that rescue efforts were ongoing to free those still trapped in the submerged vehicle.
It was not immediately clear if any survivors had been rescued from the river.
Hassan is some 125 miles west of Bangalore, India’s high-tech hub and the capital of Karnataka.
Trucks are often used to transport people in rural India. Deadly road accidents are common here, often caused by overloading, aging non-roadworthy vehicles and reckless driving.
