British Airways, Virgin cut fuel surcharges

LONDON, England (AP) — British Airways Wednesday joined rival airline Virgin Atlantic in reducing passenger fuel surcharges on cheaper tickets.

BA said it will drop the surcharge on economy tickets for long-haul flights by £13 (USD 23) to £96 (around USD 170) from midnight.

The surcharge on short-haul flights — less than nine hours — will fall by £10 (USD 17.50) to £68 (USD 120) per flight.

Premium economy passengers will see a slightly smaller fall, while the surcharge on business and first class tickets remains unchanged.

The move replicates changes by Virgin on Tuesday when it cited the “recent sustained decrease in the price of crude oil.”

The price of oil has fallen more than 45 percent from its peak in early July.
