Treasurys Slump After GDP, Jobless Claims

NEW YORK — Treasurys fell sharply on Thursday, sending yields higher, as an unchanged final reading of fourth-quarter growth and a drop in jobless claims eased concerns about the economy. The benchmark 10-year Treasury bond was down 0.9% at 99.20, yielding 3.535%. Ahead of the data, the yield, that moves inversely to price, stood at 3.

462-Pound Teen Says Food Addiction Is ‘Killing Me’

Teenager Georgia Davis weighs 462 pounds, has type 2 diabetes and can barely walk.

At 5 feet 6 inches tall, the 15-year-old said she eats more than 13,000 calories a day.

In September, Georgia will fly to North Carolina to enroll in Wellspring Academy, a school that specializes in fitness and weight loss.

Boy Critical After Wind Blows Stroller Into Lake Michigan

CHICAGO Authorities say a toddler in an stroller nearly died when high winds blew him into the cold water of Chicago’s Lake Michigan.

The Chicago Fire Department says the 2-year-old boy’s grandfather jumped into the harbor Friday afternoon in an attempt to save the child and had to be pulled from the water himself.

Sodexho Alliance First-half Sales Up 3.8% To $11 Billion

LONDON — French catering group Sodexho Alliance said Tuesday that sales rose 3.8% to 7.1 000 000 000 euros (USD 11.0 000 000 000) in the first half of its fiscal year. Organic sales growth was 9.2% in the period, the firm said, attributing the growth to market positioning. It’s confident that it will achieve fiscal-year organic revenue growth of more than 7%, and growth of around 12% for adjusted operating profit, despite existing uncertainties in the current economic environment.

Satellite-Debris Recovery Team Ready for Action

MCGUIRE AIR FORCE BASE, N.J. With haz-mat suits at the ready, a quick response team stood on alert Thursday to head anyplace on Earth that the pieces of a lame satellite shot down by the military might fall.

The recovery squad, dubbed Operation Burnt Frost, is made up of military and civilian personnel from at least 15 government agencies including the Air Force, Coast Guard, and Environmental Protection Agency.

Trial of Ga. Courthouse Rampage Suspect Opens

ATLANTA The man accused of a courthouse shooting rampage that left four people dead pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity Thursday as his trial began amid high security, more than three months after prosecutors say he confessed in the killings.

Defense attorney Henderson Hill entered the plea for Brian Nichols a day after filing a motion claiming that Nichols was insane and could not tell “right from wrong” during the killings.

CME Group Profit More Than Doubles After CBOT Deal

CME Group Inc.’s first-quarter net income more than doubled amid last year’s acquisition of the Chicago Board of Trade and surging volumes resulting from recent market volatility. The world’s derivatives exchange reported net income of USD 283.5 000 000, or USD 5.25 a share, compared with USD 130 000 000 a year earlier.

United Airlines Inspects 777s; Warns Passengers of Delays, Cancellations

CHICAGO — United Airlines is testing dozens of Boeing 777s to make sure components of a cargo fire suppression system are operating effectively.

The Chicago-based airline says testing will be done on its fleet of 52 777s. It’s warning passengers to be prepared for delays and cancellations.

United says a review of maintenance records shows a test on one of five bottles in the fire suppression system had not been performed.

Report: Mogadishu battles leave 81 dead

(CNN) Two hours of fighting between government and Ethiopian troops and Islamic militants in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, left 81 civilians dead and more than 100 wounded, a local human rights group reported Sunday.

A victim of the fighting receives medical treatment south of Mogadishu, Somalia, on Sunday.
